Why can’t I see the inventory reminder sticky notes at my remote store?

I noticed a question today in the QuickBooks Point of Sale community forums that had gone unanswered for a while.  The fact that it was unanswered for that length of time tells me that the answer to his question was not widely known.  The person was asking why they could not see inventory reminder sticky notes at his remote store.

Of course the reference to sticky notes means that they are using QuickBooks Point of Sale version 10.0.  He stated that he had checked all the settings and everything appeared to be correct.  At first I thought is may be an issue with the user rights.  A security setting in the QuickBooks Point of Sale program.  The default settings for an associate would prevent a person assigned to that security group from seeing inventory reminders.  That was not the issue in this case.  I dug a little deeper and found that inventory reminders to reorder items or about duplicate items can not be viewed at a remote store.  The only inventory reminders that can be seen at a remote store are for new items or price changes.  When you stop and think about it, it makes sense.  A remote store is not allowed to order anything but special items, not regular inventory items.  That’s reserved for the headquarters store only.

I recommend to all my customers that are using the multi-store function of the QuickBooks Point of Sale program (or thinking about it) that they go to the Help drop-down menu and select Help Contents. Once there, click on the Index tab (left side at the top) and enter multi in the search window.  In the list on the left will be an item named Allowed activities by store type.  Double-click that and you will see a list of things on the right that shows you what can and cannot be done at a headquarters and the same for a remote store.  In some cases the restrictions placed on a remote store have been critical in determining whether a business switches to multi-store or not. If this list is helpful, print it out and keep it handy for reference.
