Error 1402: Could not open key [x]
When attempting to install, the following message is returned:
Error 1402: Could not open key: [Key name].
This error can be caused by an issue with Windows user privileges or by problems with locked Windows Registry keys.
- Download the QuickBooksInstallDiagnosticTool.exe file which will attempt to resolve this issue.
- Save the file to your desktop.
- Double click the file to run the tool.
- Select the first option I am having problems installing QuickBooks and click OK.
Important: If creating a new Windows administrator account does not resolve the issue, the solution may require editing your permissions for the registry key listed in the error. Enable the Built-in Administrator account.
- Press the Windows + R keys to open Run command.
- Type lusrmgr.msc in the start screen (this will open Local Users and account manager.)
- Select the users and on the right panel you can see the admin account.
- Double click on the admin account to open the properties window.
- Uncheck Account is disabled and click Apply.
- Restart the computer and sign in with the new administrator account.
- Install again.
- Click the Windows Start button and choose Control Panel.
- Click User Accounts.
- Click Manage another account.
- Click Create a new account.
- Enter a test name and select Administrator.
- Click Create account.
- Restart the computer and sign in with the new administrator account.
- Install again.

Note: The icons might not appear on your desktop in account profiles other than the one used to install.
- Click the Windows Logo button and choose Control Panel.
- Unless already selected, click Classic View in the left side of the window.
- Double-click User Accounts.
- Click Create a new account.
- Select Set as Administrator.
- Click Create account.
- Restart the computer and log in with the new administrator account.
- Install again.

- Click the Microsoft Windows Start button and choose Run. Enter control in the Open field and then click OK.
- Double-click User Accounts.
- Click Create a New Account, and then follow the on-screen instructions to create a user account with administrative permissions.
- Restart the computer and log in with the new administrator account.
- Install again.
