In some cases, when you try to update QB POS v 12 to release 6, you can encounter an error 1706,
Error: 1706 No valid source could be found when opening Point of Sale
The following message appears when the computer is turned on and the Point of Sale installer starts:
1706 No valid source could be found
Why this is happening
The Point of Sale installation might be damaged.
How to fix it
- Before resolving this issue, be sure you have created a restore point in Windows. Consult your Windows documentation to accomplish this.
- Following this process requires that you have your Point of Sale installation CD available.
To resolve this issue:
- Run the Microsoft FixIt tool in the article How to fix MSI software update registration corruption issues
- Reinstall Point of Sale.
- Update your program to the most current release.
Basically we see this most commonly on systems that have recently updated to Windows 10. What it is indicating is that the entries QB POS makes into the windows registry are not there, have been overwritten, or otherwise changed. Reinstalling the software commonly fixes the issue as the entries are reentered into Windows.
